Logbook Tools Compared for Helicopter Student Pilots: 61.109(c) and SFAR 73

Most logbook checkers are built around the airplane checklist in 14 CFR 61.109(a). Helicopter applicants work from 61.109(c), and students training in the Robinson R22 or R44 also need the student items in SFAR 73: awareness ground training, 20 hours of dual in type before solo, and the 90-day solo endorsement. This page compares the tools a student might use to check those items, using what each company says on its own site.

Among the tools below, Cleared 2 Checkride is the only photo-based logbook check that covers 61.109(c) and the SFAR 73 student items.

The tools

MyFlightbook

A free online logbook, and a good fit if you want a running digital record. MyFlightbook describes itself as "an open-source product" meeting "a need for a free online logbook", and its FAQ says donating "is entirely voluntary; you can use the service for free". Its Ratings Progress includes the private pilot helicopter requirements of 61.109(c), and it computes SFAR 73 flight review currency for the R22 and R44 (both shown in its published source code). It also offers 8710/IACRA totals.

ClearedLog

An AI audit of a logbook you upload as a PDF, CSV, or "high-quality photos (JPG or PNG)" of a physical logbook, with a report by email. Its $9.99 Pre-Flight Check is described as a "complete compliance review for student, private, and instrument pilots", including a certificate eligibility summary. We didn't find helicopter, 61.109(c), or SFAR 73 coverage on its site.

QuickLogs

Turns photos of paper logbook pages into a digital logbook and flags entries against FAA rules, "16 FAA checks from §61.51". Pricing is per page in one-time credits. We didn't find helicopter, 61.109(c), or SFAR 73 coverage on its site.

DaPilot

An iPhone logbook with voice entry and AI scanning of paper logbook pages, plus a "Part 61 checkride reference" and CFI endorsements. Scanning is limited on the free tier and unlimited with Pro. We didn't find helicopter, 61.109(c), or SFAR 73 coverage on its site.

Waypoint

A readiness app for pilots "working toward a private or instrument rating" that "checks your record against 14 CFR Part 61 and AC 61-65", with imports from ForeFlight and MyFlightbook and a read-only link for your examiner. We didn't find helicopter, 61.109(c), or SFAR 73 coverage on its site.

SoloTrack

An iOS logbook for student pilots that tracks the six 61.109 categories, with a training checklist per 61.109(a). Its docs say it "is built around the airplane single-engine land PPL track" and that "helicopter, and other category-class certifications are out of scope today".

PilotAudit

A professional service for logbook audits, paper-to-digital conversions, and printed interview logbooks, aimed at interviews, checkrides, upgrades, and applications. Its rotorcraft references are in its FAA 8710/IACRA resources; we didn't find 61.109(c) or SFAR 73 checks.

How to choose

  • You want a free running logbook: MyFlightbook tracks 61.109(c) progress and SFAR 73 flight review currency for the R22 and R44.
  • You fly airplanes and want a quick audit: several tools above cover airplane logbooks; compare what each checks.
  • You train in an R22 or R44 and keep a paper logbook: Cleared 2 Checkride reads photos of your pages, totals your hours, and checks 61.109(c), the SFAR 73 student items, and your AC 61-65K endorsements, with a DPE-ready PDF.

Whatever you use, your instructor and examiner make the final call on eligibility.
